How to dictate in ChatGPT
Hold one keyboard shortcut, speak, and punctuated text lands in ChatGPT — and in every other app on your Mac or PC.
Pre-launch: the download page is a waitlist, not a binary. One email, on release day.
“hey sam um thanks for the detailed write up i think we should ship the fix on friday and hold the rest for the next release”
Hey Sam, thanks for the detailed write-up. I think we should ship the fix on Friday and hold the rest for the next release.
Punctuation added, filler words removed, text inserted where the cursor already was.
The biggest lever on the quality of an AI answer is how much context you put in the question, and the reason most prompts are two lines long is that typing a good one is tedious. ChatGPT does have its own microphone — but it is ChatGPT's, and it stops at the edge of that window. VoiceSnap Pro fills the prompt box in ChatGPT, and then fills the one in Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, your terminal and your editor with the same key.
What arrives in the field
Punctuation and paragraphs
Inferred from how you speak, so nothing needs reformatting afterwards.
Filler words removed
“Um”, “uh” and “like” never reach the field.
Custom vocabulary
Names, jargon and acronyms, taught once.
Saved and searchable
Every dictation goes to your notes library too.
What people actually dictate in ChatGPT
Four things worth using it for on day one, rather than a list of everything it can technically do.
Prompts with the whole story in them
The audience, the constraints, what you already tried, what “good” looks like, what to avoid. Typed, that is a two-hundred-word paragraph nobody writes. Spoken, it is forty seconds — and it is the difference between a generic answer and a usable one.
Follow-ups that carry real detail
“No, closer to this” is a wasted turn. Saying exactly what was wrong with the last answer, and what you wanted instead, costs nothing when you are talking — so the second attempt lands instead of the fifth.
Thinking out loud, then trimming
Talk through the problem into the prompt box the way you would to a colleague, then cut it down before you send. The messy spoken version usually contains the constraint you would have forgotten to type.
Using more than one assistant
Most people now use two or three: one for code, one for writing, one for search. A shortcut that only works in one of them is half a solution. VoiceSnap Pro fills any prompt box, including a local model's UI and a terminal.
How to dictate in ChatGPT, step by step
Five minutes of setup, then the same held key forever.
- Step 1
Install VoiceSnap Pro and choose a shortcut
Menu bar on macOS, tray on Windows, microphone permission on first launch. Pick a key you can hold for thirty seconds, because good prompts are longer than good messages.
- Step 2
Click into the prompt box
The composer in ChatGPT's web app or desktop app, a custom GPT, the system-instructions field, or the prompt box in whatever other assistant you have open. VoiceSnap Pro types into the focused field, so the product does not matter.
- Step 3
Hold the shortcut and describe the whole task
Say who it is for, what you have already tried, the constraints, the format you want back and anything to avoid. Punctuation and paragraph breaks are added as you go, so a long spoken prompt arrives as structured text rather than one breathless sentence.
- Step 4
Read it before you send
This is the step that makes dictated prompts better than spoken conversations: the prompt sits there as editable text. Add the detail you missed, delete the tangent, then press Enter yourself — VoiceSnap Pro never sends anything.
- Step 5
Add your stack to custom vocabulary
Framework names, repo names, library names, internal acronyms and product names. A prompt full of mis-transcribed proper nouns produces an answer about the wrong thing.
VoiceSnap Pro vs ChatGPT's own voice input
ChatGPT does have a dictation feature of its own. Here is what it does not cover — and what changes when the shortcut belongs to the operating system instead of to one app.
Where ChatGPT's own voice input stops
- It only exists inside ChatGPT. Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, your editor and every other text field on the machine are still a typing job.
- Voice mode is a conversation, not a draft. It answers out loud and moves on; if you want a written prompt you can reread and edit before sending, you are back in the composer.
- There is no custom vocabulary. Repo names, library names, product names and acronyms come back as a general model's best guess, and you retype them by hand.
- It leaves nothing behind outside the chat. There is no searchable library of what you dictated, only the conversation it happened in.
- Which voice features you get depends on the client — the web app, the desktop app and mobile do not all offer the same thing.
What VoiceSnap Pro does instead
- Works in every app on your Mac or PC, not inside one window.
- Punctuation, capitals and paragraph breaks added as you speak.
- “Um”, “uh” and “like” stripped before the text lands.
- Custom vocabulary for names, jargon and acronyms.
- 50+ languages, switchable mid-sentence.
- Every dictation saved to a searchable notes library.
- One-time purchase — no subscription, and nothing used to train AI models.
Tips for dictating in ChatGPT
The things people work out in the second week, collected here for the first day.
- Dictate the prompt, read it once, then send. The reading pass is where you notice the constraint you left out.
- Say the output format out loud — “give me this as a table with three columns” — exactly as you would ask a person.
- Specific beats clever. Length is only useful because it is a proxy for specificity, and speaking makes specificity cheap.
- In most chat interfaces Enter sends and Shift+Enter starts a new line. Dictate first, then decide which one to press; VoiceSnap Pro only inserts text.
- Paste code, dictate the question about the code. Speech is bad at syntax and good at intent.
- Prompts are saved to your notes library, so the one that worked well in March is findable in June.
